Book Club

How often have you bought yet another fantastic, really interesting looking book from one of your favourite authors? And how often have you sheepishly put it on the pile of other shiny books, meaning to read it ... eventually?

Or, how often have you been mid chapter and thought 'I'm not sure I really understand that point' or 'I'd really like to ask a question or know more about this?' Or you attend an hours talk on the subject and are left wanting more?

And then, how often have you thought 'I'd really like to share this with someone else and learn from their experience of reading the book too?' (although if not... see our book club for introverts option!)

Well that's us putting our hands up to all of that! And that's why we came up with the idea of a book club with a difference. In our book clubs you will have opportunity to:

  • Join the author for a series of 3 - 6 sessions all about the book

  • Listen to an in-depth talk each session about part of the book, delving into the detail

  • Participate in live discussions with the author and fellow learners about that sessions content

  • Opportunity to join a closed book club Facebook group of past and present attendees to carry on discussing the book and concepts with others

Everything will be recorded and made available to all who sign up so you can rewatch as many times as you like and catch up if you can't attend live. Each book club will also come with CERPS attached.

Most importantly our sessions will be informative but enjoyable. We’re on a mission to break down academic barriers and believe that learning doesn’t have to be boring. We believe that learning is a never-ending and two way process - that the person you’re learning from is a peer, and that everyone involved should be able to enjoy the experience of hearing many fresh perspectives.

We believe that:

  • It’s ok to joke and have a laugh
  • It’s more than ok to challenge, ask questions and disagree
  • Nobody should take themselves too seriously
  • You can learn from the weirdest of settings, and without intending to learn
  • Learning does not need to be formal
  • Teachers often learn as much from their students
  • We are here to equip adult learners to make informed decisions

When you attend one of our book clubs, you can expect facts with fun. This is no stuffy learning experience. We’re here to challenge, engage and learn from each other. What more could you want?

Feeling like you want the book club level detail but with less interaction?

We also realise that for some the world is already a bit too 'peopley' or you might find it easier to go at your own pace with your own thoughts. For that reason you can also select the 'introverts book club' option where you will receive a set of recordings, research references and further reading and the option to email the author at the end to raise any further questions you might have.

Introducing our second one day book club - Covid Babies with Amy Brown 21st January

This book club will run on the 21st January from 10am - 2.30pm GMT (with breaks!).  Book club sessions will be recorded and available for everyone who can't make the time or who wants to listen again (or who needs to leave early at the end for the school run etc). We also have an evening version running over 3 weeks (see below).

If these dates do not work for you, don't panic! We do plan to run this book club on different dates again in the future including our evening format and a one day study event. The introverts option will also be available soon!

CERPS available

We have applied for 3 CERPS for this book club, available after you correctly complete some multiple choice questions (at the end of the course). A certificate of attendance will be provided for those who do not require CERPS.

Price: £35 - book offer available

We have priced our course to reflect a cost of around £10 per hour. The course will work best if you have a copy of the book. You can purchase a signed copy in our shop with a special 10% course members discount.

Topics

This book club will cover in detail content such as:

  • How were pregnancy and birth affected by the pandemic?
  • What were parents experiences of caring for a baby during lockdowns?
  • How can we better support those affected going forward?
